What is a damper actuator?

A damper actuator is an electromechanical device that moves damper blades to a specified position for opening, closing or modulating control. Selection requires checking the damper torque, shaft dimensions, power supply, control signal, running time and environmental conditions together.

How should I select the torque of a damper actuator?

Use the torque requirements supplied by the damper manufacturer first. If these are unavailable, test under the actual differential pressure and sealing conditions. Then apply a safety factor in accordance with the project specifications and check the actuator's effective torque at the operating temperature and supply conditions. Do not place an order based solely on an estimate from damper area.

What is the difference between on/off, three-point and modulating actuators?

On/off control provides fully open and fully closed positions. Three-point control positions the actuator using open, stop and close signals. Modulating control typically receives a 0–10V, 2–10V or other continuous signal and provides position feedback. Selection should follow the building automation system's output type and control accuracy requirements.

How do I choose between 24V and 230V actuators?

The choice depends on the project's power supply standards, control panel design and safety requirements. 24V products are often used with building automation systems. 230V can reduce the need for transformers, but wiring and maintenance must meet the applicable electrical safety requirements. Confirm the AC/DC type and frequency before ordering.

Can an actuator replace one from another brand?

A replacement can be assessed, but torque or appearance alone is not sufficient. Check the shaft interface, installation space, rotation direction, angle, running time, power supply, signal, feedback, auxiliary switches, IP rating, temperature and certification scope. Provide the original model and wiring diagram for cross-checking.

Search by product series or model on the Technical Resources and Certification pages. Each document should show its revision, publication date, applicable models and status. If you cannot find your model, send a photograph of the nameplate to technical support for verification.

What is the product warranty period?

The warranty period may vary by product series, sales region and contract terms. The website should display only an approved, consistent policy. For individual projects, the quotation, contract and documents supplied with the product take precedence. All series except the explosion-proof series have a five-year warranty; the explosion-proof series has a one-year warranty.

Are samples, customization or private-label services available?

Availability depends on the product series, technical feasibility, certification limits, quantity and lead time. Provide the target specifications, estimated quantity and market certification requirements for confirmation by the sales and engineering teams. Unapproved minimum order quantities or lead times should not be promised on the website.

What should I include in an enquiry to receive an accurate response sooner?

Provide at least the country or region, application, product or valve model, torque or nominal diameter, power supply, control signal, certification requirements, quantity and expected delivery time. Nameplate photographs, drawings or project data sheets can significantly reduce follow-up questions.

Which applications are suitable for standard damper actuators?

They are suitable for comfort ventilation, fresh-air systems, air handling units, variable air volume systems and general industrial ventilation where a fail-safe return on power loss is not mandatory. Fire safety or hazardous-area applications require a series that meets the relevant operating logic and certification requirements.

How large a damper can one actuator operate?

Damper area alone cannot determine this. Blade construction, seals, bearings, differential pressure, contamination and installation method all affect torque. Use torque data from the damper manufacturer or on-site testing as the basis, then apply an engineering safety factor.

Does a modulating actuator need position feedback?

If the control system needs to monitor the actual position or perform closed-loop diagnostics, choose a model with a feedback output. The feedback signal type and range must match the controller input. Check the zero point and full scale during commissioning.

Is a shorter running time always better?

No. Excessively fast movement may increase noise, mechanical shock and control oscillation. Running time should match the system's control cycle, airflow stability, fire safety operating requirements and the damper's capabilities.

What commissioning checks are needed after installation?

Confirm that the mechanical travel is unobstructed and that the rotation direction and safe position are correct. Check the power supply and signals, set the end points and range, verify feedback and auxiliary switches, and record the actual full-stroke time and any abnormal conditions.

When is a fast-running damper actuator needed?

Use one when the process, differential pressure control, equipment protection or fire safety interlock explicitly requires a short operating time. The technical specification should state the target angle, permitted time, load, temperature and power supply conditions.

How should the operating times of fast-running actuators be compared?

Compare them at the same rotation angle, torque load, supply voltage and temperature. Distinguish motor-driven running time from spring-return time. Comparing marketing names alone is not meaningful.

Does fast operation affect service life?

Service life depends on the load, operating frequency, environment and mechanism design. Check the product's cycle test conditions and permitted duty cycle, and avoid excessive torque and frequent reversals.

Can a fast-running actuator be used on a fire damper?

Only if the specific model, operating logic, thermal device and certification scope meet the project requirements. Fast operation alone does not establish suitability for fire safety applications.

How can operating time be verified on site?

At the rated supply, actual load and project environmental conditions, measure from the change in control signal until the damper reaches its position and stabilizes. Also record the feedback signal, mechanical end points and repeated test results.

How should a low-noise actuator's noise rating be assessed?

First check the test standard, measurement distance, background noise, installation method and operating phase. dB(A) values measured under different conditions cannot be compared directly. The website must publish the test conditions alongside the values.

Where are low-noise actuators suitable?

They are commonly used in guest rooms, hospital wards, offices, meeting rooms, recording spaces and other areas sensitive to equipment operating noise. The assessment must still consider installation location, sound transmission through ducts and overall plant-room noise.

Does reducing noise compromise operating time?

There may be design trade-offs; check the data for the specific model. Compare noise, torque, running time, control accuracy and duty cycle together rather than relying on a single measure.

Does installation affect noise?

Yes. Rigid connections, thin-walled ducts, structural resonance and loose parts can amplify noise. Secure the actuator according to the manual and, where necessary, have an acoustic or building services engineer assess vibration isolation measures.

Can a standard actuator be modified on site into a low-noise model?

Modifying the internal transmission or motor on site is generally not recommended. Choose a low-noise model that has undergone complete testing and remain within the limits of certification and warranty coverage.

What is the difference between spring-return and non-spring-return fire safety actuators?

Spring-return models use stored spring energy to reach a preset safe position when power is lost. Non-spring-return models require electrical power and control logic to move. The choice depends on the fire safety cause-and-effect matrix, local codes and requirements for the complete damper assembly.

Does an actuator's UL or CE certificate mean the complete damper assembly is compliant?

Not necessarily. An actuator certificate covers only the products and conditions listed in it. The complete damper assembly may require separate testing or certification. Check whether the combination of damper, actuator, thermal device and installation is within the approved scope.

How is the safe position of a fire and smoke control actuator determined?

The system design defines the states for fire alarm, smoke extraction, power loss and reset. Different dampers may need to close or open. The website cannot give a single fixed answer that applies to every project.

What do the thermal device and auxiliary switches do?

The thermal device triggers operation or interrupts the circuit at the design temperature. Auxiliary switches provide damper position feedback or interlocking. Their ratings, switching points and wiring must match the control system.

Do fire safety actuators need periodic testing?

Functional testing is required in accordance with local regulations, the system maintenance plan and product instructions. At a minimum, verify full travel, operation on power loss, feedback, thermal control or interlocks, and unobstructed mechanical movement. Keep records.

What is the difference between ATEX and IECEx?

Both are explosion-protection compliance systems for hazardous areas, but their applicable regulations, market acceptance and certificate structures differ. First identify the destination regulations and the owner's specifications, then check the specific certificate numbers, markings and applicable models.

Is knowing that an area is Zone 1 enough to select an explosion-proof actuator?

No. Also confirm the gas or dust environment, equipment group, gas or dust group, temperature class, ambient temperature, ingress protection rating, cable entries, power supply and mechanical load.

Does an explosion-protection certificate cover every model in the same series?

Do not assume that it does. Only the models, variants and conditions explicitly listed in the certificate and its annexes are covered. The website must map models to their corresponding certificates.

Follow the certificate conditions, manual and local procedures for work in hazardous areas. Unauthorized opening, modification, replacement of cable entries or sealing work may compromise explosion-protection integrity.

No. Also check the design flow, operating pressure, maximum close-off differential pressure, medium and temperature, Kv/Cv, connection type, leakage requirements, actuator capability and control signal.

The choice depends on whether the system uses variable-flow, diverting or mixing control, the pump and terminal-unit configuration, and the design intent. The HVAC design should establish the circuit before the valve and actuator are selected.

Check the stroke, required thrust or torque, mounting interface, valve stem direction, close-off differential pressure, power supply, signal and environment. Preferably use a verified list of compatible valves.

Are valve installation orientation and maintenance clearance important?

Yes. An incorrect orientation may affect service life, leakage or the risk of water reaching the actuator. Follow the flow-direction markings, permitted mounting orientations and minimum maintenance clearances. Allow space for removal, installation and manual operation.
